How to Turn a Temp Job Into a Permanent Position

Temporary employment has seen a big increase in the last few years. Companies small and large are hiring temps and contract workers to help out during busy seasons, while permanent employees are on leave, or even when they want to “try before they buy.” While there is no guarantee that a temporary position will turn into a permanent one, it is possible.

Here are a few ways to turn your temp job into a permanent one:

1. Learn about the company

It’s important to learn all you can about the company where you work. Become knowledgeable about it’s history, the products, services, other internal teams, their functions and even competitors. If you do your homework, it will show that you are invested and engaged and you will be more valuable as an employee.

2. Understand the culture

Understanding the business is good but you must also understand the culture of the organization. Practice company values and embrace the company mission. Take the time to understand the company rules, the dress code, the company branding and its structure. If you take the time to understand these things, it will be noticed by your coworkers, and you will be a logical fit when a position opens up.

3. Take initiative

Show commitment and a strong work ethic. Volunteer to take on additional projects and have a positive attitude. Ask for more work. Be confident and come with ideas and suggestions for your coworkers. The more you go above and beyond, the more indispensable you will be to your team.

4. Talk to your staffing company

If you are interested in making your temporary role permanent, contact the staffing company that placed you there and let them know you are interested in working at that company full-time. Your staffing company will already have a relationship with the company and that is a huge advantage. Let the staffing company be your advocate. They have your best interest in mind and also know what the company is looking for.

5. Be a team player

Just because you’re a temp doesn’t mean you’re not part of the team. Make it a point to get to know other employees. Offer to help your coworkers with their workload when they seem overwhelmed. Get involved in a committee, join a volunteer project or attend an event outside of work with coworkers, as you would do if you were full-time. The more involved you get with your team, they will be more likely to think of your when it’s time to fill a position.

Temporary work is a great way for you to get to know a company and see if it is the right fit for you. If you decide you want to become a permanent employee, keep these tips in mind during your time there.
