Always arrive on time
This may seem obvious, or something you always do, but it should still be top of mind for habits in the new year. Being on time to work can be as simple as waking up 10 minutes earlier, which in the grand scheme, isn’t much longer at all! Prepping for your day the night before is a useful trick to avoid staring inside your closet for too long, scouring the kitchen for a decent lunch, searching for your cars keys, etc. Reducing the time you are rushing around in the morning will improve your mental clarity and start your work day off on the right foot.
Spend time with a mentor
No matter what field you are in, or how far you are in your career, a mentor can help develop your ideas and advance your career. If you already have a mentor, make an effort to schedule an adequate amount of time with them in the new year. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day craziness, but making time to discuss work and life matters with a mentor is one of the best ways to receive an outside perspective on your current situation. If you don’t yet have a mentor, that should be one of your new year goals! Reach out to a few people you look up to or would like to get to know better and invite them to get coffee or lunch with you.
Ask questions
Active learning is important in any career. Even if you’ve been in a job for years, there is always more to learn. Don’t forget to ask questions and advance your knowledge in multiple areas. The new year can also provide you opportunities to watch and learn more about others in your organization. Even if their job description is the complete opposite of yours, there is always value in learning. The more you know about your company as a whole, the more valuable of an employee you are! Update your resume
No matter how secure you are in your job, it is always a good plan to keep your resume updated. Whether or not you are planning a job search soon, it saves time in the end if you update your resume as you go rather than trying to update it years after leaving other jobs or being at your current one. Keeping your skills updated along with your resume will ensure you are ready for any opportunity comes your way. You never know when a dream job offer will knock at your door, and if you are prepared it will make the whole process that much easier!
